Is this the Year the Cougars improve?

Head Coach June Daugherty returns for her 6th season at Washington State but with a record of 45-109 for her first 5 seasons. Last season the Cougars were 13-20 and 5-13 in league play. June coached 20 years at first Boise State then at Washington and still has a winning record over her career. Her husband Mike Daugherty returns as the Head Assistant. Brian Holsinger is back for his 6th season. Ashley Glover was the Video Coordinator and is now in her first year as an Assistant.

UCLA Bruins are healthy again

Cori Close begins her second year at UCLA. It’s the long time assistant coach’s first Head Coaching job. Close was the Florida Assistant Head Coach for 7 seasons but is from the west coach and coached at UCLA in the 90’s. Until this past injury riddled season Close had been to the NCAAs 15 straight seasons. Last year UCLA was 14-16 overall and 9-9 in Pac 12 play.

Shannon Perry is back for her 2nd year. Her most recent position before UCLA was an assistant at Duke for 5 seasons. Tony Newnan is also back for his 2nd season. His background includes coaching stints at UCSB, Oregon State and for 8 seasons prior to UCLA, Westmont College of Santa Barbara. Jenny Huth is back for her 2nd season. Her prior experience includes being a graduate assistant with Close at Florida State.

THE SCHEDULE: San Diego State, Oklahoma, Norte Dame, Texas and maybe St John’s highlight their very good pre season schedule. This will be challenging. For Pac 12 play UCLA doesn’t travel to Colorado or Utah, nor do they host the Oregon schools.

LOSSES: Rebekah Gardner was the leading scorer last season and graduated. Gardner averaged 16 points and 6 rebounds per game. She also made 30 threes, not a big number but 2nd on the team.

Moriah Faulk averaged 6 points and 3 rebounds in 16 minutes per game as a Frosh. She transferred to another school.

RETURNEES: Markel Walker is a 6-1 Sr Forward and the 2nd leading scorer for the Bruins last season at 15 points and the leading rebounder at an outstanding 11 per game. One of the Pac 12’s elite players.

Atonye Nyingifa is a 5-11 redshirt Jr who played only 9 games last season but she averaged 15 points and 9 rebounds in those games. She missed her true Soph season with an injury, played as a true Jr all games then just 9 last year in her true Sr season. So she is in her 5th season and could play one more year after this season.

Corinne Costa is a 6-4 Jr Post who averaged 4 points and 4 rebounds in 21 minutes per game.

Thea Lemberger is a 5-7 Jr and the returning Point Guard. Last season Thea averaged 12 points per game and led the team, although just slightly, in assists. She also led the team in threes, but only 40 and at 30%.

Mariah Williams is a 5-4 Sr Point Guard who averaged 5 points per game both splitting time with Lemberger and playing the Point when Lemberger moved to the 2.

Rhema Gardner is a 6-1 Soph Wing who averaged 26 minutes per game as a Frosh and had 4 points and 5 rebounds per game.

NEWCOMERS: The most important newcomers are two players who were on the Bruin roster last season but couldn’t play. 6-0 Sr Forward Jasmine Dixon missed the season with an injury and 6-3 Post Alyssia Brewer sat out after transferring from Tennessee.

Dixon has been All Pac 10 in both her UCLA years. She spent her Frosh season at Rutgers. In her two years Dixon has averaged just shy 14 points and 8 rebounds per game. She is a tremendous inside player and rebounder.

Brewer played three seasons at Tennessee where she averaged 7 points and 5 rebounds per game. Brewer was a High School All American.

Nirra Fields is a 5-9 Frosh Guard who may well start but even if not with 4 Srs who probably start, Fields will see a lot of playing time. She was ranked # 11 overall and a McDonalds All American. Fields is Canadian who played on both their National 17U and 19U teams and scored 17 points in a game against the American 17U team. She is the Laker Coach’s legal guardian, after going the 3 High Schools in 3 years. Last year was with the awesome Mater Dei of Southern California team. (This is the new High School of the Samuelson sisters). Fields is a game changer.

Kari Korver is a 5-9 Frosh Guard, ranked # 98. A great three point shooter, scoring 25 points a game in High School. Kari hit 5 or more threes in 13 High School games as a JR with a high of 11.

Lauren Holliday is a 5-8 Frosh Guard, ranked # 32 by one service and # 65 by another. . Very quick and a very tough defensive played who scored 23 points a game as a Jr.

Alexis Perry is a 5-5 Soph Guard who did not play last season. She is from Jeanette Pohlen’s High School.

OUTLOOK: UCLA only made 107 threes at 29% last season and that needs to be improved upon especially as the Bruins will be very strong inside. With Dixon, Walker, Nyingifa and Brewer the Bruins will be very strong inside and have the potential, with health, to be a top 10 team.

October 2, 2012

The Utes look to the first division

Last season The Utah Utes went 16-16 overall and 8-10 in Pac 12 play. They split 2 games in the WNIT. Head Coach Anthony Levrets returns for his 3rd season. Velaida Harris returns for her 3rd season. Matt Legerski returns for his 10th season. In those 10 seasons Utah has been to 5 NCAA tournaments. Willette White returns for her 2nd season, having been at Oregon for 6 seasons.

SCHEDULE: Michigan, Utah State and BYU are the toughest non conference teams the Utes will play. In league play USC and UCLA don’t travel to Utah and Utah doesn’t travel to Washington or Washington State.

LOSSES: Utah had five players play 33 or more minutes per game and they lost only one, Point Guard Janita Badon. Badon averaged 10 points per game although only 11 threes total. She averaged 6 rebounds per game and had a fine 1.4: .9 assist to turnover ratio. Post Rachel Morris averaged 7 minutes and has left the team. Another Post Diana Rolniak has also left the team, I suspect due to injuries. Diana averaged 2 points and 3 rebounds in 14 minutes per game but could only play 13 games.

RETURNEES: Four of the five starters return from last season’s WNIT team. Michelle Plouffe is a 6-4 Jr Center who averaged 14 points and 8 rebounds per game last season. Plouffe also made 41 threes at 31%. She was on the Canadian Olympic team

Taryn Wicijowski is a 6-3 Redshirt Jr who averaged 13 points and 9 rebounds per game this past season. Like Plouffe, Taryn is Canadian and has played on their Jr National teams.

Iwalani Rodriques is 5-9 Sr Shooting Guard who averaged 11 points per game with 59 threes at 30%. The previous year she averaged 15 points with 110 threes at 45%.

Rachel Messer is a 5-9 Sr Guard who averaged 5 points per game, starting all but one game. She has been consistent hitting about 34 threes in each of her three seasons at an overall 34%.

Cheyenne Wilson is a 5-1 Soph Guard who started 7 games and averaged 4 points and 17 minutes per game.

Chelsea Bridgewater is a 6-0 Sr Forward who played sparingly last season.

NEWCOMERS: Paige Crozon is a 6-1 Frosh Guard who could start right off the bat. She is another Canadian and has played on the past 3 various Youth National teams.

Nakia Arquette is a 6-1 Frosh Froward, ranked # 220.

Ciera Dunbar is a 5-10 Redshirt Soph Point Guard who could start at the Point if healthy. However she missed last season and a great deal of her High School Jr and Sr years with knee injuries.

Awa Kalmstrom is a 5-7 Frosh Guard from Sweden. She has twice played on Swedish youth National teams.

Danielle Rodriquez is a 5-10 Frosh Guard ranked # 222. She averaged 18 points and 6 rebounds for SoCal’s Warren High School last season and qualified for the State Meet in the 1600 meters.

And then along comes transfer Krystal Forthan. Krystal has transferred from LSU and the 6-5 Soph will sit out this season. Forthan was the # 5 Player out of High School, a superstar in the making. However this is her 6th school in 6 years. Four High Schools and two Colleges.

OUTLOOK: Four returning starters and a couple of good newcomers could well spell improvement. Key is winning their non conference games to get the confidence to play against the top tier Pac 12 teams.

September 23, 2012

Oregon State is Rising

What a difference a Coach makes. From the cellar to a 20-13 overall record and 9-9 in the Pac 12. Scott Rueck returns for his 3rd season after guiding the Beavers to only their 2nd 20 win season in 17 years. Rueck spent 14 years at George Fox winning 77% of his games. Now with really fine recruiting Oregon State is in the mix for a high Pac 12 finish.

As to assistants, Mark Campbell returns for his 3rd season with his Oregon roots. Megan Dickinson returns for her 2nd season having coached with Rueck at George Fox. Eric Ely returns for his 3rd season.

THE SCHEDULE: Mississippi State, Texas Tech and Michigan State are the hardest by a bit. In League play the Beavers don’t play in LA and the Arizona schools don’t come to Corvallis. So that’s a schedule break for the Beavers.

LOSSES: Leading scorer and rebounder Earlysia Marchbanks graduated. She scored 12.5 points and had 7.5 rebounds per game. Alexis Bostick is no longer on the team. Bostick was a back up Guard who averaged 3 points in 14 minutes of play.

THE RETURNEES: While Marchbanks started every game she was just one of five who did so and the other four do return along with three of the top four subs.

Ali Gibson is a 5-11 Soph Guard who was a huge surprise for the Beavers last season. Gibson was their # 2 scorer at 12 points per game and had the most threes, 56 at 35%. She scored over 20 points three times.

Sage Indendi returns as the Point Guard. Sage is a 5-9 Sr who played at George Fox as a frosh. She scored 8 points per game and made 46 threes at 28%. She was All Tournament as a Frosh at George Fox in the NCAA Division 3 final four.

Patricia Bright is a 6-4 Sr and the returning Center. Bright averaged 9 points and 5 rebounds per game and blocked an amazing 115 shots. Bright is from Arizona but went to a Florida JC.

Alyssa Martin returns at Forward. She is a 6-0 Jr. Last season Martin 8 points and 4 rebounds per game. Martin’s Father played at Oregon State. She is a Biology Major.

Thais Pinto is a 6-7 Sr Center who averaged 6 points and 4 rebounds in only 14 minutes per game. Pinto is a Brazilian who transferred a year ago from a Nebraska JC.

ShaKiana Edwards-Teasley is a 6-2 Sr Forward. She averaged 3 points and 4 rebounds in 15 minutes per game. Dad James Edwards was a Basketball star at Washington and played 19 NBA seasons.

Mollee Schwegler is a 5-6 Sr Guard who averaged 4 points in 11 minutes per game. An All State player in High School in Oregon, she averaged 17 points per game in JC.

THE NEWCOMERS: Jamie Weisner lite of the End of Trail Tournament after her JR year and was the # 41 player as a Sr in High School. She is a 5-10 frosh who will see a lot of action and will probably start. A tremendous High School player scoring 33 points in the State of Washington 2A Championship game. If she participates, will be a favorite to place in the Pac 12 Javelin.

Samantha Siegner is a 6-3 Frosh Forward, ranked # 91 in High School. She was All State in Oregon.

Khadidja Tourne is a 5-8 Frosh Guard. All State, 3A in Washington, she scored 48 in a game last season in High School. Parents are both College professors. # 94 PG in High School.

Deven Hunter is a 6-3 Frosh Forward, ranked # 229.

Ruth Hamblin is a 6-6 Frosh Center from British Columbia. As a Sr averaged 27 points, 13 rebounds and an amazing 11 blocks per game. She played on Canada’s 18U team this past season and the 17U team in 2011.

OUTLOOK: The Beavers return 4 starters from a team that won 20, 2 in the WNIT. Then they add several promising and one outstanding frosh. I really like Weisner. This could possibly be an NCAA team. Wow I’m now on a limb.

The Oregon Ducks, home of the Hot Seat

Paul Westhead returns for his 4th season as the Head Coach of the Ducks. He has gone 18-16, 13-17 and 15-16 last season . Worst, the recruiting hasn’t given a lot of promise to future success. At age 73 this could be the make or break year for Westhead in Eugene. The Ducks Pac 12 record was 7-11.

Dan Muscatell returns for his 4th season as the Top Assistant. Dan was Head Coach at Sacramento State for 6 years prior to Oregon and was an assistant at Oregon before Sac State. Shandrika Lee returns for her 2nd year after 2 years at Army and 4 at Cal Poly. Bianca Zieman is a new coach at Oregon. She started for Loyola of LA from 2002-06 and coached there this past season.

THE SCHEDULE: Non conference games include St Mary’s, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Illinois, Fresno State and UConn. A solid pre season. The Ducks do not host the Arizona schools or play in LA.

LOSSES: Amanda Johnson was an outstanding player for the Ducks. Although she missed about 10 games last season and came back maybe not fully healed she averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds a game. To give Westhead and staff credit they certainly developed players who were not highly recruited and Johnson and Nia Jackson.

Nia Jackson averaged 9 points per game, fighting injuries and had a fine 1:.8 assist to turnover ratio leading the Duck fast break.

Jasmin Holliday averaged 13 points and 7 rebounds a game.

Three huge losses for the Ducks as they are 3 of the top 4 scorers from last season and the top two rebounders.

RETURNEES: Guard Ariel Thomas is the top returning scorer at 9 points per game. Thomas is a 5-6 Jr Guard. Ariel should be the starting Point Guard.

Jordan Loera is a 5-9 Soph Guard who should start in the backcourt. Last season Jordan started 10 games and led the team with 45 threes at 34%. She averaged 6 points per game.

At the post Danielle Love is a 6-2 Jr who can play the 4-5. Last season Love started every game at the 4 or 5 averaging 7 points and 5 rebounds. She also hit 39 threes at 31 %.

Liz Brenner is a 6-1 Soph post who started 8 games and played in 21 after coming over from the Volleyball team where she was and is an outstanding Outside Hitter. Even with her late start, joining the team in December, Liz averaged 6 points and 6 rebounds per game. Brenner had a tremendous Volleyball game at Maples last year against Stanford.

Deanna Weaver is a 5-11 Jr wing from Wilcox High school who scored 7 points and also had 4 rebounds in just 18 minutes per game. Weaver made 24 threes at 36%.

Lexi Peterson is a 5-11 Soph Wing who may well start. She averaged 4 points in 12 minutes.

Meagan Carpenter is a 6-4 Soph Center who may start before Brenner joins the team. Carpenter averaged only one point but 3 rebounds in 8 minutes per game.

Laura Stanulis is a 5-9 Sr Guard who averaged 3 points in 12 minutes per game last season.

Amanda Delgado is a 5-7 Soph Guard who just played a few minutes as a frosh.

Chynna Miley is a 6-2 Jr Forward who has played just a few minutes in her first two seasons.

NEWCOMERS: Jillian Alleyne is a 6-3 Frosh Post from Southern California where she averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds as a Sr and was ranked # 95 in the nation. Her High School won the Div 1A So Cal Championship last season as Jillian scored 17 points and had 20 rebounds.

Devyn Galland is a 5-8 Frosh Point Guard. Devyn was All State in Washington at the fabled Lewis & Clark High School in Spokane. She could be the 3rd Guard for the Ducks.

Janitah Imaleava is a 6-2 redshirt Frosh Post. Janitah had to sit out this past season after being named the # 31 Post out of High School. As a Sr she averaged 13 points and 9 rebounds playing in a very strong So Cal league.

OUTLOOK: Losing their 3 top players and not having great recruiting will hurt the Ducks this season. A shame as Oregon has a great fan base, a beautiful arena, and deserve more.

USC turns over their Staff again

For the 2nd time in Mr Cooper’s tenure he has turned over the Staff bringing in 3 new Assistant Coaches. Darren Park comes from Cal where he spent the past season and the 7 seasons prior at Louisiana Tech and Maryland. Tai Dillard comes from Texas San Antonio where she coach for 5 years. Evan Unrau comes from Santa Clara where she coached for 3 seasons and before that a season at UCSB. Fans here may remember her as her first job in the college ranks was the Video Coordinator at Stanford.

Head Coach Michael Cooper returns for his 4th season at USC. Last season USC was 18-12 and 12-6 in Pac 12 play. USC played a tough non conference schedule but beat only Gonzaga as they went 6-6.

THE SCHEDULE: USC plays Gonzaga, Nebraska, Texas A&M, Duke and Vanderbilt at home and Fresno State and San Diego State at their arenas. A very strong and difficult non conference schedule. USC does not play the Oregon schools at home nor travel to Utah or Colorado.

LOSSES: USC lost 3 of their top 4 scorers from last year’s team. Brianna Gilbreath graduated after starting for 4 seasons. Last season Brianna averaged a team high 12 points per game and also 7 rebounds per game. She hit 24 threes at
39%. Sister Stephanie Gilbreath who spent most of her career with knee injuries decided to play her 5th season at New Mexico after she graduated in June. Stephanie averaged 4 points per game.

Ashley Corral started most of her career at USC, last season averaging 12 points and hitting 69 threes at 38%. Jackie Gemelos ended her career after 9 games last season with still another knee injury. In those 9 games she averaged 11 points. Michelle Jenkins was a starting Center at one point but injuries kept her from playing last season and she has graduated. Danielle Peacon was scheduled to enroll at USC after her frosh year at UOP and a great Soph year at JC. She is a 6-3 Post but did not enroll at USC.

RETURNEES: Cassie Harberts returns as the starting Center. She is a 6-2 Jr who averaged 12 points and 6 rebounds while starting every game for the Trojans. Cassie will be a very strong presence in the Post and at the 4. Harberts was a High School All American. She’s a great student and wants to be a Doctor.

Christina Marinacci is a 6-1 Sr who like Harberts has been a starter most of her USC career. Last season Marinacci averaged 9 points and a team leading 7 ½ rebounds per game. Christina was a McDonalds All American and Honorable Mention All Pac 12 Defensive player.

Ariya Crook only started 4 games but averaged 20 minutes per game and 5 points per. It’ll be interesting to see where Crook plays as it was some at the Point last year but she had a poor assist to turnover ratio, 1:2. Crook is a 5-7 Soph. Also she shot 21% from three. But she can be an excellent player and expect big improvement from her this season. Crook was a McDonalds All American and her career goal is to be a Detective.

Alexvz Vaioletama is a 6-1 Soph Forward who averaged 5 points and 5 rebounds and 21 minutes per game. Alexvz was a McDonalds All American and her cousin, Steve Francis, played in the NBA.

Desiree Bradley is a 6-1 JR Forward who averaged almost 4 points and a bit over 1 rebound per game last season. Bradley was the # 35 player out of High School.

Thaddesia Southall is 6-4 Redshirt Soph Post. Southall injured her knee in High School and sat out her Frosh season. Then 6 games into her Soph year she injured her knee again. She was the # 99 player out of High School.

NEWCOMERS: Jordan Adams leads the way and should be the Starting Point Guard. Jordan is a 6-1 Frosh and was on everyone’s All American Team and the McDonalds All American team. Adams was the # 6 player in High School last season. Jordan should start from Day 1.

Brianna Barnett is a 5-7 Frosh Guard # 95 recruit. She could play either Guard position.

Destinie Gibbs is a 5-11 Frosh Guard, ranked # 24 among guards in High School.

And there are more who are not incoming Frosh. Kate Oliver is a 6-4 JR post, a transfer from Marist a year ago. As a Soph at Marist, this Aussie averaged 8 points and 4 rebounds per game as Marist was ranked # 21 in the final pool. Oliver sat out last season practicing with USC and she is ready to play a big role in the Post with Harberts.

Kiki Alofatuli is a 6-1 Redshirt Frosh Wing. Kiki is one of three Mater Dei players (Adams and Vaioletama) with the Trojans. Kiki signed with ASU out of High School and sat out last season as a transfer although she did not play at ASU. She was ranked
# 26 in High School.

Deanna Calhoun is a 6-3 Redshirt Frosh from Northern California, Albany HS. Calhoun was the # 34 Forward in High School 2 years ago. She tore her ACL in Dec of her Sr year so redshirted this past season at USC. In High School Deanna was averaging 18 points and 12 rebounds before her injury.

Malia Cravens is a 5-9 Soph Guard who transferred from Hawaii. She will sit out this season.

OUTLOOK: USC shot only 37% from the floor last season. Not good at all, and certainly was their limiting factor. Their offensive scheme must improve this season. The fact that they shot 33% from three really shows how poorly they shot within the circle. As usual USC is loaded with talent, six players were top 30 out of High School. With the coaches changes, and I would gage for the better, maybe USC will finally rise to a top 20 program which many have been expecting.

AN UPDATE: ASU Schedule. ASU plays non conference games against North Carolina State, and Florida in a Las Vegas Tournament. Boston College and Providence on the road and Texas Tech and University of San Diego at home. They don’t travel to Oregon or host Stanford or Cal.

Colorado hopes to move up this season

Linda Lappe returns as Head Coach for her 3rd season. Lappe is a Colorado Grad and is one of the youngest Head Coaches in the nation at about age 32. She has improved each year, 18-16 in her first season then 21-14, 6-12 in league play, last season. Also last season Colorado won three post season games, non NCAA.

Jonas Chatterton, who was an assistant at BYU for 8 years prior to Colorado returns for his 3rd season. LaTonya Watson retruns for her 2nd season. She was an assistant at Colorado under Ceal Berry from 1996-2005. Kelly Rae Finley is a new coach, having been an assistant at Harvard the past 4 years. She replaces Jennie Baranczyk who became the Head Coach at Drake.

SCHEDULE: Auburn, San Diego State, Louisville, Illinois and New Mexico make for a pretty good non conference list of opponents. Colorado does not play at the Washington Schools and neither USC nor UCLA travel to Boulder.

LOSSES: Only one loss for the past season and that is 6-3 Julie Seabrook. Seabrook started every game averaging 7 points and 5 rebounds per game.

RETURNEES: It starts with 5-10 Sr Guard Chucky Jeffery. Jeffery led the Buffs in scoring, 15.5, and rebounding, 8.0, per game. She also led the team in assists, steals and free throws made, and made 32 threes at 35%. Chucky made the All Pac 12 Defensive team, the first time in any league a Colorado player had been so honored. Chucky played youth Football for 8 years.

Brittany Wilson is a 5-7 Jr Guard who averaged 9 points per game last season while hitting 44 threes at 31%.

Meagan Malcolm-Peck is a 6-2 Forward who averaged 4 points and 4 rebounds per game. Meagan’s twin Brenna is also on the team. As a frosh she averaged 5 points per game and as a Soph 7 points per game. She was ranked # 97 overall out of High School. Like her twin sister Meagan was Home Schooled but both played High School basketball.

Lexy Kresl is a 5-11 Soph Guard who averaged 9 points per game while making a team high 63 threes at 32%. Lexy averaged 26 points per game her last 2 years in High School in Arizona. She also finished 6th in the State 800.

Jen Reese is a 6-2 Soph Center who missed the last 10 games after being injured in a game at Stanford. Reese averaged 8 points and 6 rebounds per game despite starting only 9 games. Jen was the Gatorade State of Oregon Player of the Year twice and a Parade All American. As a Sr she averaged 25 points and 20 rebounds per game. Watching her play the summer after her Jr year I was impressed with those old time skills. Get all rebounds, nice outlet; get the ball in the post turn and score.

All 5 players listed above averaged at least 22 minutes per game, so lots of game experience back.

Rachel Hargis is a 6-4 Jr Center who averaged 4 points and 3 rebounds in 17 minutes per game.

Ashley Wilson is a 5-8 Soph Guard, the twin sister of Brittany Wilson. Ashley averaged 3.5 points and 3 rebounds in 16 minutes per game.

Jasmine Sborov is a 6-0 Soph Guard who averaged 3 points and 3 rebounds in 16 minutes per game.

Brenna Malcolm-Peck is a 6-2 Jr Forward who played only 3 games before an injury caused a redshirt year. Brenna is the twin sister of Ashley Malcolm-Peck. She has only played in 3 games the last 2 seasons due to injuries. Brenna was ranked # 96 overall out of High School.

NEWCOMERS: Jamee Swan is a 6-2 Frosh Forward ranked # 89 and by HoopGurlz
# 38. Swan averaged 21 points and 13 rebounds per game as a Sr and was the State of Arizona Division II Shot Put Champ. She will be a big part of this team for the next 4 years.

Lauren Huggins is a 6-1 Frosh Guard-Forward who was ranked # 63 and # 121. She’s a fine three point shooter.

Arielle Roberson is a 6-1 Redshirt Frosh Forward. Roberson was injured before the season and missed her Frosh year. In High School she averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds. Roberson was the # 63 Forward out of High School 2 years ago.

Kyleesha Wilson is a 5-7 Frosh Point Guard ranked # 222.

OUTLOOK: The questions are can Reese take over in the post and score solid numbers every game. Plus can the two sets of twins step up to be solid players capable of scoring 15 or more on any night. Swan and Huggins add more depth to a team that lost only one player. Depth is great but someone needs to join Jeffery as take over type players. Colorado could well join the top 6, the 1st division.

The Return of Charli

Arizona State welcomes back Charli Turner-Thorne from her year off. Charli came back with a plan as Interim Coach Joe Anders is gone, and Assistant Coach Chris Mennig went back to his job the previous year with Blue Star.

Jackie Moore comes in as an assistant and the recruiting coordinator with 18 years of coaching experience. While she spent the past 3 years as a Wal-Mart Corporate Manager, she has coached, in most recent order, at Nevada, Miami (FL), Boston College U of Mass and prior to that Head Coach at Santa Fe JC in Gainesville, FL.

The 2nd assistant will be former ASU star Amanda Levens. Levens was the Head Coach at Southern Illinois for the past 4 years going from 5 wins in Year One to 18 wins this past season. Levens was All Pac 10 twice, in 2001 and 2002. This makes one wonder if Levens might be the next ASU Head Coach.

Last year while Charli was off ASU went 20-12 with a loss to UOP in the WNIT. In the Pac 12 ASU was 10-8. Not a typical year and changes were made.

THE SCHEDULE: The schedule has not been announced yet.

LOSSES: First of all the stats: ASU scored only 58 points per game and made just 120 threes at 29%. The Sun Devils lost thru graduation 5 players but 28 points per game, almost half. They lost 17 rebounds per game, almost half. The Sun Devils lost 77 of their threes, or 64%.

Kimberly Brandon was both the leader scorer and rebounder at 10 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. Kali Bennett was second in scoring, 8 points per game and rebounding, 6.5. Alex Earl made 39 threes or 1/3 of ASU’s total and at 35%. All three were starters. Oliva Major was 2nd on the team with 28 threes also at 35%. Haley Parsons played 5 games.

RETURNEES: Deja Mann is a 5-7 Sr and was the starting Point Guard last season. She averaged 8 points per game and had a fine 1.0 : .6 assist to turnover ratio. Mann led the team in free throws and shot 81%.

Micaela Pickens is a 5-8 Sr Guard who started all but three games last season as ASU used a three guard line-up. Pickens averaged 6 points and 4 rebounds per game.

Promise Amukamara is 5-8 Soph Guard who played in all but one game averaging 15 minutes and 4 points per game.

Adrienne Thomas is 5-9 Jr Guard who played all games last season averaging 10 minutes and 1.5 points per game.

Joy Burke is the ASU Post, a 6-5 Jr. Burke only played 8 games last year so almost a newcomer. She suffered a concussion in Game 8 and had to sit out the remainder of the season. As a Soph Burke had Highs of 7 points and 10 rebounds. Joy made a shampoo commercial at age 4 in Taiwan where she lived for her first 12 years.

Janae Fulcher is a 6-3 Sr Forward who averaged 6 points and 3 rebounds in 15 minutes per game. Janae graduated in three and a half years and is a 5th year Sr.

Jada Blackwell is a 6-1 Soph Forward who averaged 6 points and 4 rebounds 14 minutes per game last season.

NEWCOMERS: Eliza Normen is a 6-0 Guard/Forward who is a redshirt Frosh. Normen tore her ACL towards the end of her Sr Season in High School and played only 4 games last season with a non knee injury. I saw her play after her Jr year in High School and loved her play. She is an excellent shooter who is a complete team player as an excellent passer also. If healthy, Normen will really make an impact for the Sun Devils.

Elisha Davis is a 5-3 Frosh Guard from Berkeley High School. I saw her also playing Travel ball. An excellent passer and 3 point shooter who can drive. Named # 131 in the Country out of High School by Blue Star.

Isidora Purkovic is a 5-11 Frosh Guard from Canada. Isidora played on the Canadian National 17U and then 19U teams.

Arnecia Hawkins is a 5-10 Frosh Guard ranked # 124 overall by Blue Star and # 51 overall by All Star Girls Report.

Nisha Barrett is a 6-1 Jr and a JC transfer. She was All State JC in California averaging 19 points and 13 rebounds per game.

Haley Videckis is a 6-0 Frosh Forward from Illinois who averaged 18 points and 6 rebounds a game last year in High School. She also made 74 threes this past season.

Katie Hempen is a 5-9 Soph Guard who transferred from Southern Illinois at the end of the past school year. Hempen was the League Frosh of the Year but must sit out this season due to the transfer rule. As a Frosh last season Hempen averaged just shy of 10 points per game.

OUTLOOK: ASU lost 4 of their top 5 players from last year due to graduation. That’s a huge loss. Charli returns and hires two new Assistants and they sign 3 in the late signing period. A lot seems to depend on Burke and Normen being 100%, as the Sun Devils are a guard orientated team without them. It’s an opportunity for the new players and ASU has only 3 Srs so 11 would return next year. It’ll be interesting as always with Charli Turner-Thorne back in charge.

August 16, 2012

The Huskies are hit again by a big injury

Incoming Frosh Katie Collier, already a cancer survivor, recently tore her ACL and will miss this season. The 6-3 Collier is a McDonald’s All American and an outstanding prospect at Center and/or Power Forward. We all wish her the best and a full recovery.

Coach Kevin McGuff is in his 2nd year at Washington coming from Xavier. All three Assistants begin their 2nd year at Washington also.

Last season Washington was 20-14 overall and 8-10 in Conference play. However they did not play a top 35 or so team in non conference play. They did have league victories over UCLA and USC.

The Schedule: St Mary’s, San Diego State, Georgia Tech and Wisconsin are the tougher non conference foes. None should be top 35 teams although when polls come out in October we will review non conference schedules for all Pac 12 teams. Washington does not play at Stanford or Cal or at home against either Colorado or Utah. So definitely a scheduling break there.

Losses: Regina Rogers was the leading scorer and rebounder at 17 and 8.6 per game. She probably would have been replaced by Collier, now the post position has unknowns.

MacKenzie Argens was the 4th leading scorer, 7 points per game and 2nd in rebounds, 6.3 per game.

Mollie Williams was 5th in scoring, 5 points per game, and 3rd in rebounds, 5.5 per game.

Charmine Barlow scored 2 points per game and had 3.5 rebounds per game.

All five above graduated. Also gone are would be Soph Ashley Moore who transferred and did not play last year and Marjorie Heard who would have been a Jr. Heard played 12 games and started 1. Also Airashay Rogers was an incoming Frosh Guard and ranked # 116 but she is not eligible.

Returnees: There are 5 returnees who played at least 25 games, and one who played 8and four others who redshirted for a total of 10. The best of all returnees is 2010 All Pac 10 player Kristi Kingma. Kigma tore her ACL and missed the entire 2011-12 season. If you remember her great, I think 5 threes, against Stanford, you know how much Washington, or any team would miss her. Kristi scored 15.6 points per game 2 years ago, her most recent season. She is a 5-10 Guard and a 5th year Sr. She had 79 threes 2 years ago, at 41%, a school record and she has 139 threes in her career. Kingma will be an impact player.

Soph 5-7 Point Guard Jazmine Davis was the Pac 12 Frosh of the Year, scoring 15.7 points per game with 67 threes at 36%. Her assist to turnover ration was not good at all, but that will improve a lot with Kingma and her year of experience.

Mercedes Wetmore is a 5-8 Jr Guard who could play either Guard position. Wetmore was 3rd on the team in scoring at 7 points per game and had 27 threes although at
31%.

Kellie McCann-Smith is a 5-9 Jr Guard who spent her Frosh year at Nebraska. Kellie scored 4 points per game but did hit 33 threes at 35%.

Kassia Fortier is a 5-8 Jr Guard who has played just 18 games in 2 years.

Beatrice Carta is a 5-7 Redshirt Frosh Guard from Italy. She tore her ACL before arriving at Washington. In Europe Carta was the 4th best Guard in her age group. She was Captain of her National 18U team and scored 17 points in the European Championship Game.

Deborah Meeks is a 5-8 redshirt Frosh Guard who sat out last season after tearing her ACL as a Sr in High School.

Jeneva Anderson is a 6-0 Sr Forward who played in 25 games last season but only 7 minutes per game, which has been the same for all three of her seasons.

Talia Walton is a 6-2 Redshirt Frosh who missed last season with a non ACL knee injury. Walton was the # 32 Forward out of High School.

Aminah Williams is a 6-0 Soph Forward who averaged 4 points and 4 rebounds per game this past season.

Newcomers: First, as you read above, Washington will have 3 players playing for the first time as all missed their Frosh season with injuries. Then there are 3 true Frosh entering Washington from High School. Katie Collier would have been one of the top Frosh in the Pac 12 and maybe the nation. She’s a 6-3 Post who missed a third of her Sr season undergoing treatment for cancer. Then she returned and played very well in the McDonalds All Star game. Sadly she tore her ACL last month so a huge loss. She was ranked # 21 out of High School.

Heather Corral is a 6-1 Guard, as since Washington may play 3 or 4 Guards, Heather may play some at Forward. Corral twice tore her ACL in High School, but was healthy last season and scored 15 points per game. I saw her play several years ago and was very impressed. Heather is the sister of former USC star Ashley Corral.

Mathilde Gilling is a 6-3 Frosh Center from Denmark. She has played on their National team. She played this past summer with their 23U team, and in the past a starter for their 16U National team. Gilling has a brother who plays for ASU.

Outlook: Really with only 6 returning players, plus 4 who redshirted with injury, and 3 newcomers it’ll be an adjustment period and how long that lasts is anyone’s guess. If Gilling is good, then with the Huskies very good three point shooting and the return of Kingma the Huskies might challenge for the top 6. However without Collier that seems a stretch. It is great to have Kingma back and she will be tough for all Washington’s opponents.

August 9, 2012

The Wildcats have many new faces.

Well 11 teams to cover and just over 11 weeks to the first game so lets toss the ball on the court and look at the various Pac 12 teams for the 2012-13 season.

One again Arizona has turned over a number of players. They lost 2 to graduation and 3 more transferred out. However they have 7 newcomers so a net gain of two. Arizona was 15-17 last season but after going trough their pretty weak non conference schedule in 11-1 they went 3-15 in Pac 12 play. Then the Wildcats had a nice win over UCLA in the Pac 12 Tournament before losing to ASU to end their season.

Head Coach Niya Butts returns for her 5th season. Assistants Brandy Manning, now the Associate Head Coach and E.C. Hill also return. Calamity McEntire joins the staff from Boise State where she spent 4 years. Calamity is a Tennessee Grad who did not play basketball there but was a team manager.

THE SCHEDULE: The non conference schedule is highlighted by BYU, New Mexico and UNLV. Yes looking for that 11-1 record like this last season. The Wildcats play the Oregon schools, Stanford and Cal just once in league play with the 18 game Pac 12schedule.

LOSSES: Starting Point Guard Shanita Arnold graduated. She had and excellent 1.8:1 assist to turnover ratio and scored 10 points per game. Arnold led the team in minutes per game. Starting Guard, in a 3 guard offense, Reiko Thomas also graduated. Thomas scored 6 points per game while 6th in minutes per game.

The three who transferred are 6-5 Center Aley Rhode who would have been a Soph, Guard Erin Butler who also would have been a Soph and Lindsay Fearing who would have been a Sr. Rhode started every game and was 3nd on the team in rebounding, 6 per game, and scored almost 8 points per game. Butler started 7 games and averaged 3 points per game. Fearing averaged just 2 points per game but played in most and started 3 games.

RETURNEES: The 2 returning starters are All League Guard Davellyn Whyte and Candice Warthen. Whyte has been All Pac 10/12 each of her three seasons. She’s a
5-11 Sr Guard who averaged 17 points and 7 rebounds per game last season and hit 71 threes at a rate of 37%. Whyte has a chance to become Arizona’s all time leader scorer and three point shooter. She is certainly one of the league’s top players.

Candice Warthen is a 5-5 Jr who was averaging 16 points per game through the first 9 games before hurting her foot and missing 8 games. The foot hindered her for the remainder of the season. For the year she averaged 12 points per game and probably will be the Point Guard this season.

Erica Barnes is a 6-2 Jr who averaged 11 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. She is the only experienced Big so will have to play much of the time in the Post. Barnes had a fine 2011-12 season.

The other three returnees are 6-1 Sr Cheylene Harper who played 7 minutes per game last season, 5-8 Soph Guard Layana White who played 9 minutes per game and 6-2 Sr Forward Cheshi Poston who did not play after transferring to Arizona from a JC. At JC Polston averaged 13 points and 11 rebounds in her Soph season.

NEWCOMERS: Keyahndra Canyon is a 5-9 Frosh Guard from San Diego. Canyon averaged over 20 points a game for 3 seasons at Mission Bay High School. She was ranked # 195 by Blue Star.

Nyre Harris is a 5-8 Frosh Guard from Stockton. Harris averaged 12 points and 6 rebounds, assists and steals per game as a Jr. She was ranked # 253 as a Sr, by Blue Star and the # 45 Guard by Hoop Gurlz.

Shereen Sutherland is a 6-1 Frosh from Corona, Ca.

Simone Westbrook is a 5-10 Frosh Guard from Chandler, AZ and was ranked # 40 in the US by Blue Star, but the # 59 Guard by Hoop Gurlz.

Alli Gloyd is one of three transfers signed by Arizona. She is local and is a 6-1 Jr. Gloyd was a JC All American averaging 15 points and 9 rebounds per game.

Kama Griffitts is a 6-0 Jr Wing and a transfer from an Idaho JC. Griffitts actually transferred to Arizona in January and redshirted this past season. As a JC Soph her team won the National JC Title. She averaged about 15 points per game during her two JC seasons and made 72 threes as a Frosh.

Lynette Holmes is a 6-1 Jr and a transfer from Xavier where she averaged 12 points and 5 rebounds per game in her one and one half seasons. Holmes was suspended from her Xavier team in Jan and transferred to Arizona after the past school year. She will be eligible to play in 2012-13 and will redshirt this coming season. You may remember Holmes scoring about 18 points against Stanford this past season.

OUTLOOK:

Great pair of guards and weak in the front court. It could be a long Pac 12 season for the Wildcats. No sugar coating it, they need big performances from their 6-1 and 6-2 players and they either haven’t played before or played little.

The NCAA’s begin

Stanford has won 31 games already, just 6 more to go. A 31-1 record made Stanford a # 1 seed and in the Fresno region. The first game is against Hampton at 10:30 AM PDT, on ESPN 2. Monday, if we win, we play either West Virginia or Texas, who we beat earlier this season at 4PM PDT on Monday. If all goes well we move to Fresno for Saturday-Monday games, hopefully.

Hampton is an unranked team and a 16 seed. However they are located very close to Norfork, where we play this weekend. West Virginia is an 8 seed, ranked # 25 and 30in the 2 polls and have an RPI of 39 (Stanford is 2). West Virginia has a record of 23-9. Texas is unranked with an PRI of 54 and a record of 18-13.

The top ranked teams in our Fresno Regional, are # 2 seed Duke, RPI 10, # 3 seed St John’s RPI 11 and # 4 seed Purdue, RPI 15.

Cal is the only other Pac 12 team in the Tournament. They play Iowa for the right to play Notre Dame. The only other west coast schools are San Diego State, Gonzaga, and Fresno State.

The WNIT has expanded to 64 teams. Pac 12 teams are:
Oregon State
Washington
Utah
ASU
Colorado

Other Western Teams are:
St Mary’s
UNLV
Cal Poly Pacific
USD
CS Northridge

The Pac 12 Tournament is moving to Seattle starting next season and for 3 years. Then maybe another locale or maybe stay. The Tournament will start one week earlier for the Women that it has in the past. With the condensed Schedule the Rival schools will play each other twice in the same week.
