Pac 12 Preview:  Oregon

 

Last Season:  

15-9 overall and 10-7 in Pac 12 play.  The Ducks were very likely going to be the NCAA Champs two years ago   

The Coaches:

Coach Graves
Kelley Graves starts season Eight with the Ducks.  Graves coached in the WCC first at St Mary’s then Gonzaga winning 67% of his games over 17 seasons.

Jodie Berry is in her 7th season at Oregon as an assistant after coaching with Graves at Gonzaga for 11 years.

Jackie Nared Hairston is in her first year as an Assistant.  The former St Mary’s player was coaching at Arizona.

Mike Moser is in his first year as an assistant.  He’s a former Oregon player and has been with the NBA Dallas team for the past several years.   

 

Losses:

Coaches Mark Campbell and Xavi Lopez Left for Sacramento State.  Campbell as the Head Coach and Lopez as Lead assistant.  

Erin Boley who averaged 11 points, 5 rebounds and shot 40% from three.

Taylor Chavez who averaged 4 points and started 9 games transferred to Arizona.

Angela Dugalic averaged 3 points and 4 rebounds and was ranked # 22 out of HS transferred to UCLA.  

Lydia Giomi averaged 3 points and 2 rebound

Jaz Shelley transferred to Nebraska

Taylor Mikesell transferred to Ohio State.  

 

Additions:

Taylor Bigby , 6-1 Frosh Guard from Nevada ranked # 15

Phillipina Kyei, 6-8 Frosh Post from Calgary Alberta

Ahlise Hurst, Sr, 5-9 Guard transfer from New Mexico where she averaged 11 points over her three seasons, including 39 against Oklahoma.  She’s from Australia.  

Endyia Rogers 5-9 Jr Guard transfer from USC.  In her two years at USC she averaged 14 points.  

Shannon Dufficy, 6-2 5th year Sr transfer from Missouri. In two years at Missouri she redshirted and averaged 6 points and 4 rebounds last season.   Before Missouri she was at Utah State for two seasons averaging 16 points and 10 rebounds as a Soph.

Chanaya Pinto, 6-1 Jr Forward a JC transfer.  Pinto is from Mozambique.  She averaged 14 points and 8 rebounds her final JC year.

Taylor Hosendove, 6-2 Sr Forward transfer from Georgia State and before that Clemson.   She averaged 12 points and 9 rebounds last season.  

 

The Schedule:  

Oklahoma, South Carolina, Northwestern and UCONN are the toughest non conference games.

 

The Team:

Nraya Sabally will be a Redshirt Soph having  missed her first two

Sedona Prince

season with injuries,  Sabally averaged 13 points and 7 rebounds.  

Sedona Prince is a 6-7 Redshirt Soph who transferred from Texas, and sat out last season.  Sedona was a McD All American and ranked # 8 out of HS.   Like Sabally she didn’t play her first two seasons.   Prince averaged 10 points and 4 rebounds.

Te-Hina Paopao, 5-9 PG from SoCal ranked # 11 out of HS.  Paopao averaged 10 points and 4 assists and made 30 threes at 40%.   She missed the last few weekes with an injury.  

Sydney Parrish, 6-2 Soph Wing ranked # 8 out of HS.  Parrish averaged 6 points and 3 rebounds.  

Kylee Watson, 6-4 Forward ranked # 17 out of HS.   Watson averaged 2 points and 1 rebound in limited play. 

Maddie Scherr, 5-11 Guard ranked # 19 out of HS.  Scherr averaged 2 points and 2 rebounds. 

Predictions:  

Seven transfers and six returnees.  Interesting.     Prince, Sabally and PaoPao will start and all three averaged 10 or more points per game last season.  Rogers will certainly start and my guess Parrish the 5th starter.   A very good lineup with very good depth.   Oregon is back.

2021-22 Roster

 

Last Season:  Colorado went 12-11 overall, and 8 - 8 in the conference.  

The Coaches:  Head Coach JR Payne will be in her 6th year at Colorado

Coach JR Payne
after two seasons at Santa Clara.   Payne led Santa Clara to its first winning season in 8 seasons and finished 23-9.   JR, no periods, and real name Ali-Marie, is a graduate of St Mary’s where she played for now Oregon coach Kelly Graves.   Her first coaching job was at age 23 for Graves when he started at Gonzaga.  

Shandrika Lee is in her 6th season as an assistant at Colorado after coaching for Payne at Santa Clara.  Lee is a graduate of Pepperdine and has coached at Oregon.

Toriano Towns is also in his 6th and also coached with Payne at Santa Clara.  Towns coached at Gonzaga with Payne and later at Arizona where he was the Post coach for the great, late Polk.

Alex Earl is in her 6th year on the staff.    Alex was an assistant with Payne three seasons ago at Santa Clara and played for years at ASU graduating in 2013.   Alex was a HS teammate of JJ Hones on a team where all five starters player Division 1 basketball.  

 

Losses:

Annika Jank is a 6-3 Post who played very little.

Madison Buford, 5-9 Guard a JC transfer who averaged just 6 minutes in 13 games.   

Zuzanna Kulinska is a Guard from Poland.  Last season she averaged 2 points and 1 rebound. 

Bottom line not much in the way of losses.

 

Additions:          

Tameiya Sadler is a 5-8 Guard and a Soph who transferred from Washington.  

Quay Miller is a 6-3 Jr Post who transferred from Washington.  

Maura Singer 6-4 Redshirt Soph Post

Kennedy Taylor is a 6-3 Frosh Forward.  

Kindyll Wetta is a 5-9 Frosh Point Guard.

Two excellent additions in Sadler and Miller coming from Washington.  

 

The Schedule:   Oklahoma State, Wisconsin and Marquette head the non conference list. 

 

The Team:   


Mya Hollingshed is a 6-4 Sr Post using her extra year who averaged 15 points and 8 rebounds.

Jaylyn Sherrod, 5-8 Jr Point Guard who averaged 10 points, but injury caused her to miss the second half of the season.  

Tameiya Sadler is a 5-8 Guard and a Soph who transferred from Washington.  Sadler averaged 10 points per game for Washington and while made just 14 threes she did at 45%.  

Quay Miller is a 6-3 Jr Post who transferred from Washington.  Miller averaged 10 points and 6 rebounds with the Huskies.  

Frieda Formann, 5-11 Soph Guard from Denmark.   Formann averaged 12 points per game and hit 62 threes at 41%.  

Sirena (Peanut) Tuitele is 6-1 Sr Forward who averaged 8 points and 5 rebounds. 

Charlotte Whittaker is a 6-4 Redshirt Jr Post from Australia who averaged 5 points and 2 rebounds.   

Maura Singer 6-4 Redshirt Soph Post who missed her frosh and soph years with injuries.        

Lesila Finau is 5-10 Sr Guard who averaged 5 points.  

Aubrey Knight is a 6-0 Redshirt Sr Wing who averaged 5 points and  5 rebounds. 

Tayanna Jones is a 6-1 Sr Guard who transferred from Georgetown a year ago.  She averaged 4 points and 2 rebounds.

Allysa LaFontaine is a 6-0 Soph Guard who played in just 7 games. 

Kylee Blacksten is a 6-3 Soph Wing who averaged 4 points and 2 rebounds.

Kennedy Taylor is a 6-3 Frosh Forward.  Taylor was the Kansas 6A POY and threw the Discus in HS. 

Kindyll Wetta is a 5-9 Frosh Point Guard.   She was ranked as the # 16 Point Guard in the nation.  Her Mom played Basketball at Colorado.  

 

Predictions:  

With Hollingshed, Miller, Sadler, Formann and Sherrod Colorado can start 5 players who averaged 10 or more points in the Pac 12 last season.  Plus the Buffs have good depth.   This is a team on the rise to the top 6 in the league or better.

Cal's Roster

Last Season:  1-16 overall and 1-12 in conference play.   

The Coaches:


Charmin Smith with 2 degrees from Stanford returns for her 14th season at Cal and is now the Head Coach for her 3nd year..  

Kai Felton is back for her 9th year at Cal.  Kai has been an Assistant at Oregon, 2 years, and at USC, 5 years.  Kai is no longer an official coac but she is a Special Assistant. 

Three New assistants for Cal.    Paul Reed joins the staff after 4 years at Washington.

Eliza Pierre is in her first year after 4 years at UCSB.

Kelly Cole comes from Northeastern where she was the Head Coach.  Cole and Charmin coached one year together at Boston College.  

 

Losses:  

Assistant April Phillips is now at Arizona

Assistant Wendale Farrow is now at USC

 

Additions:

Jayda Curry, 5-6 Point Guard from SoCal, unranked, but scored 27 to help win the SoCal Championship

Karisa Ortiz, 6-0 Guard Grad Transfer from Texas/  Mitty HS to Penn State to Texas.  Last season at Texas she averaged 4 points and had a 2:1 Assists to Turnover ratio.

Jaden Bush , 5-11 Forward a Grad Transfer from Harvard.  In her last season 2018-19 she averaged 11 points and 8 rebounds.   

 

The Schedule:   

Arkansas at Arkansas is the only Power 5 team although Cal hosts a three game tournament that includes Mississippi. 

 

The Team:

Leilani McIntosh, 5-5 Jr Guard who averaged 10 points. 

Cailyn Crocker 5-9 Redshirt Soph Guard who averaged 7 points 2 seasons ago.  She missed last season with an injury.    

Jazlen Green 5-11 Redshirt Soph Guard averaged 9 points and made 48 threes at 37% 2 seasons ago.  Green missed last season with an injury. 

Evenlien Lutje Schipholt, 6-2 Jr Forward from the Netherlands.    Last    year she averaged  7 points and 7 rebounds.  

Mia Mastrov, 5-11 Soph ? Guard who graduated early from HS to join the Bears.  Mia averaged 7 points and 4 rebounds playing in the last 6 games.

Dalayah Daniels 6-4 Soph  Forward ranked # 13 out of HS.   Daniels averaged 12 points and 7 rebounds. 

Fatou Samb, 6-4 Soph Post who averaged 3 points and 3 rebounds. 

Alma Elsnitz 5-11 G from Sweden.   Alma was injured and played in only the first game however in that game she scored 14 points.  

Sela Heide, 6-7 Soph Post from Washington ( hometown is the Twin Peaks TV show location).   Sela played only 9 games before being injured and averaged 3 points and 3 rebounds. 

Ornela Muca, 5-10 Guard from Greece.  She averaged 2 points.  

Michelle Onyiah, 6-3 Soph Post ranked # 35 out of HS.   She averaged 9 points and 7 rebounds.  

 

Predictions:  

From a team with no depth last season to 14 players now.   Daniels, Onyiah and McIntosh are three probable starters but this year Charmin has a number to choose from.   

 

2022 Recruiting:

Amaya Bonner, 6-0 Wing from Oakland.   Not ranked but offers from ASU, Arizona, UCLA, Utah and Washington.

Last Season:   The Sun Devils were 12-12 and 6-9 in Pac 12 Play.

The Coaching Staff:   


Charli Turner Thorne returns for her 24th season as the Head Coach, and has taken the Sun Devils to the NCAAs 10 of her last 13 years of coaching. 

Jackie Moore is in her 9th year as an Assistant at ASU and is now the Associate Head Coach.    She has been an assistant at Miami of Florida, Boston College and Nevada.   

Yvonne Sanchez will be in her first year coming from Michigan where she was an assistant for 3 seasons.  Sanchez was Head Coach at New Mexico in the past for 5 years. 

Nikki Blue the former UCLA star will be in her 3nd year as an assistant.   Blue has Stanford connections having coached the past two years with Nicole Powell at Grand Canyon and then for three year prior for Coach McCall at Cal State Bakersfield.   

Meg Saunders is a special assistant to Charli.   This is Saunders 17th year on the staff .

 

The Losses:  

Sydnei Caldwell, averaged 4 points.  Caldwell transferred to Penn

Eboni Walker, averaged 7 points and 5 rebounds.  Walker transferred to Syracuse.  

Jamie Loera averaged 3 points.

Iris Mbulito averaged 3 points and 3 rebounds.

Bre’yanna Sanders averaged 3 points.

 

The Additions:  

Meg Newman, 6-3 Forward/Post from IN ranked # 41

Ayzhiana Basallo, 5-5 Grad Transfer with 2 years of eligibility, a Guard from San Jose State.    SJS only played 4 games this past season and Basallo sat out the 2018-19 season due to the transfer rule.   In 2019-21 she averaged 18 points shooting 45% from three.

Mael Gilles, 6-1 Forward Grad Student from Rutgers she averaged 8 points and 4 rebounds last season.  

Jade Loville , 5-10 Sr Wing with 2 years remaining to play.  Jade transferred from Boise State where she averaged 17 points including 40 against UNLV.  

Isadora Sousa, 6-0 Jr Guard a JC transfer who was 2nd team All American.

Taya Hanson is a 5-10 Sr Guard from Canada.   Hanson averaged 13 points.  

Jayde Van Hyfte is a 6-1 Redshirt Sr who played just one game and was injured.  The year before she averaged 5 points and 5 rebounds.  

Jaddan Simmons, 5-9 Soph PG, averaged 11 points.

Katelyn Levings, 6-3 Soph Forward who averaged 6 points and 4 rebounds. 

Maggie Besselink, 6-3 Soph Forward who averaged 5 points and 6 rebounds.

Sydney Erikstrup, 6-1 Soph  Wing averaged 4 minutes

Imogen Greenslade, 6-4 Soph Post averaged 9 minutes

Gabriela Bosquez, 5-7 Sr Guard from a Texas JC who averaged 7 minutes

 

 

Predictions:   

ASU is a team with new players who will be depended on and a fairly young team.   Hanson is a vet and solid player.  However beyond that any of 8-9 could start.  This isn’t the ASU of old, on the other hand great coach and they will play hard.

Arizona preview after an "almost" storybook finish last season for the Wildcats

 


Preview:  Arizona

Last Season:  Arizona was 21-6 overall and 13-4 in Pac 12 play, under Head Coach Adia Barnes.   Of course all the way to the Final NCCA National Championship game.  

 

The Coaches: Adia Barnes is the all time leading scorer at Arizona and is in her 6th year the Head Coach.  Barnes had been at Washington as an assistant  for four years as the Huskies came from the 2nd division of the Pac 12 to the NCAA Final Four.  Barnes played professionally for 12 years including for 4 WNBA Teams.  

Salvo Coppa, or Mr Barnes is a 6th year assistant.  Coppa is from Italy and has extensive overseas coaching experience.

Ashley Davis is in her first year after coaching at Oklahoma State for 6 years.   Davis played at TCU.

Erin Grant is in her first year after coaching at USC for 2 years.  She has coached at Texas Tech, Memphis and New Mexico and played at Texas Tech. 

 

Losses:  

Aari McDonald averaged 21 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists and 

Trinity Baptiste averaged 9 points and 6 rebounds. 

Several others who seldom played have left the team. 

 

Additions:  

Anna Gret Asi, 5-8 Frosh Guard from Estonia.   50% from three in HS.  Played on two Youth National teams averaged 19 and 14 points per game.

Taylor Chavez, 5-10 Sr Point Guard who transferred from Oregon where she averaged 4 points making 9 starts.    As a Soph Chavez averaged 6 points and shot 47% from three and was the Pac 12 6th person player of the year.

Madison Conner is a 5-10 Frosh Guard from Arizona.   She did play a bit in 6 games and graduating early from HS to join the Wildcats.  Conner was ranked # 56 out of HS.

Koi Love is a 6-0 Jr Wing who transferred from Vanderbilt.   The season at Vandy was stopped after 8 games but Love averaged 21 points and 9 rebounds. 

Aaronette Vonleh, 6-3 Frosh Post from Oregon ranked # 38. 

Aryiah Copeland, 6-3 SR Post who Grad transferred from Alabama.   Last season she averaged 14 points, 9 rebounds and was % 3 in the nation with a 61% Field Goal %.  

Gisela Sanchez, 6-3 Frosh Forward from Spain.   Sanchez averaged 10 points and 7 rebounds for her Club team in Spain last season.   

Seven newcomers.

The Team:  

Cate Reese 6-2 Sr Post averaged 11 points and 5 rebounds

Sam Thomas is a 6-0 5th Year Sr Forward who averaged 7 points and 3 rebounds.  

Lauren Ware 6-5 Soph Post North Dakota, ranked # 13 out of HS who averaged 4 points and 4 rebounds.  

Bendu Yeaney, 5-10 Sr Guard from Portland who transferred from Indiana.   Bendu averaged 4 points and 3 rebounds in her first season at Arizona.

Helena Pueyo is a 6-0 Jr Guard from Spain who averaged 4 points.

Shaina Pellington is a 5-8 Redshirt Sr G who averaged 6 points.

Derin Erdogan, 5-6 Soph Guard from Turkey who played little last season.  

Semaj Smith is a 6-6 Sr Post who played little last season. 

 

Predictions:  

Big loss with McDonald of course.   I would imagine the starters would be Reese and Ware at the post and Big forward with Chavez at the point, with Thomas and Love.  Lots of depth for the Wildcats.   Attendance will be great, what a job by Coach Barnes.   

Key will be working into roles for several of the new players, but the league will be so very tough this season.  The Wildcats should be top 5 but how high?
