Pac 12 Preview: Washington Huskies

Last Season:
Washington was 20-14 overall and 10-8 in Conference play. The Huskies won three games in the post season WNIT. Average attendance was 1,795.

The Coaching Staff:
Mike Neighbors is in his 2nd year as the Head Coach after 2 years as the lead assistant. He came to Washington from Xavier with then Head Coach Kevin MuGuff. Neighbors was an assistant for MuGuff at Xavier for 4 years, and before he was an assistant at Arkansas, twice, Colorado and Tulsa.

Kevin Morrison is the Associate Head Coach and in his third year at Washington. Morrison was an assistant at Cal for 4 years before Washington.

Adia Barnes is in her 3rd year at Washington and is the leading scorer at the University of Arizona.

Fred Castro is in his 2nd season after several years at Tulsa.

Losses:
Mercedes Wetmore averaged 6 points and 4 assists per game as the starting Point Guard. That’s the Huskies only loss.

The Schedule:
Washington’s non-league schedule includes Oklahoma, Florida State, San Diego State and Texas A&M. In Pac 12 play they have single games against the Arizona and LA schools, with the LA schools in Seattle.

Additions:
Heather Corral is back after an ACL. Corral is a 6-1 Wing and a redshirt Soph. She played just a few games last season averaging 6 points per game and as a frosh averaged 5 points per game. She is the sister of former USC player Ashley Corral who stands 2nd all time Pac 12 in three pointers made.

Brianna Ruiz is a 5-10 Redshirt Frosh Guard who missed last season with a knee injury. Ruiz averaged 20 points per game as a HS Sr and was a T&F star.

Hannah Johnson is a 6-1 Frosh Forward. Johnson was the AAA Southern CA Section player of the year as a Jr. She was ranked # 83.

Kelli Kingma is a famous name for Washington basketball and is a 5-8 Frosh Guard. Kingma was ranked # 68.

Kalia Lark is a 6-0 wing and a Frosh. Lark played for the fabled Mater Dei program and signed with Fresno State then got her release after the coaching change.

That’s four new players, 2 frosh and 2 off injury and all will play and contribute this season.

The Team:
Jazmine Davis is a 5-7 Sr Guard ranked as only the # 25 PG out of HS and now listed pre- season as one of the Pac 12’s top players. Davis averaged 19 points per game playing 36 minutes per game. She made 82 threes at 34% although shot just 39% overall.

Kelsey Plum is a 5-9 Soph Guard who averaged 21 points and 37 minutes per game. Plum made 81 threes at 37% and 85% from the Free Throw line. Plum also averaged just under 5 rebounds. Her sister was an outstanding setter at Oregon, Mom played volleyball at UC Davis and Dad Football at San Diego State.

Talia Walton is a 6-2 Redshirt Jr Forward who averaged 11 points and 8 rebounds. On the down side Walton shot just 34%, but did make 52 threes.

Aminah Williams is a 6-0 Sr Forward who averaged 7 points and 10 rebounds while shooting 47%. Dad Guy Williams was an All American basketball player at Washington State and played NBA with the Warriors.

These four players started all but 4 games last season.

Katie Collier is a 6-3 Redshirt Soph Center. Collier was ranked # 22 overall out of HS and the first woman from Washington named to the McD All Star game. Collier beat cancer as a HS Sr then sat out her frosh year after injuring her knee. Back this past season she averaged 4 points and 2 rebounds. However Collier is a talent and if back close to her HS Jr ability she can be a force and the key to a run to the top for the Huskies.

Chantel Osahor is a 6-2 So Forward/Center. Osahor is a great passer who averaged 3 points and 4 rebounds.

Mathilde Gilling is a 6-3 Jr Center who averaged 7 minutes per game this past season. Her brother played for ASU the past few seasons.

Predictions:
A strong starting line-up with great three shooters and now good to very good depth. The Huskies will challenge for a top 3 finish in the Pac 12.

2015 Recruiting:
Deja Strother, 6-5 Post WA, PN # 40 overall, Blue Star # 66

Pac 12 Preview: Oregon

Last Season:
Under former coach Paul Westhead the Ducks were 16-156 overall and 6-12 in the conference. The Ducks averaged 93 points but gave up 80. I expect under their new coaching staff that will change a lot. The Ducks average attendance was 1,038 and that will rise for sure.

The Coaching Staff:
It’s all new with Kelly Graves coming in as the Head Coach after so much success at Gonzaga. Graves coached at Gonzaga for 14 seasons and won 70% of his games taking over for a down and out program at the time. Graves was named the League’s Coach of the Year 8 times. Before Gonzaga he was the Head Coach at St Mary’s for 3 seasons.

Former Stanford All American Nicole Powell is in her first season at Oregon having come from Gonzaga with Graves. Nicolle coached one year at Gonzaga while playing in the WNBA. Powell has retired from the NBA after playing for 11 seasons.

Jodie Berry is in her first season at Oregon coming with Graves after 11 seasons at Gonzaga.

Mark Campbell is a big time addition to the Staff after 4 years at Oregon State as their prime recruiter.

Losses:
Ariel Thomas was the starting Point Guard averaging 14 points and leading the team with 3 assists per game.
Danielle Love averaged 27 minutes and 6 points with 5 rebounds.
Laura Stanulis averaged 2 points per game.

The Schedule:
After North Carolina it’s Fresno State. The Ducks should thrive in the pre-season. Oregon plays Stanford, Cal, Utah and Colorado just once, another break.

Additions:
Lexi Bando is a 5-9 Frosh Guard from Eugene. Bando was all state 3 times averaging about 20 points per game those 3 years.

Jacinta Vandenberg is a 6-5 Center from Australia, but she is also a transfer from Fresno State and will redshirt this year due to transfer rules. She started every game last season for Fresno averaging 6 points and 6 rebounds.

Danielle Walter is a 6-0 guard who transferred from Gonzaga after graduating, but isn’t on the current roster. So maybe she didn’t come.

Marie Berthuel is a 5-3 Guard from France who graduated from Oregon this past year and will walk on.

Tatum Neubert is a 6-2 Forward from Colorado. Tatum led the state in scoring, 23 points per game. Her father was on the TV show Baywatch for several years, a show some of us remember.

The Team:

The Ducks return 4 of their top 6 scorers and with the frosh Center Vandenberg coming in it’s really hard to tell if 6-3 Jr Post Jillian Alleyne will be the 4 or the 5. But given the other 3 top scorers returning are less than 6-0 I’ll guess Alleyne at the 4 and Vandenberg starts at the 5. Alleyne averaged 21 points and 16 rebounds while shooting 55%.

We all know the offense will not be run and gun making some but shoot again Offense and will play far better Defense so keep that in mind when reading these stats from last season. For reference the Ducks shot 40% and the opponents 44% last season. Also opponents had 50% more assists than the one on one playing Ducks.

Chrishae Rowe is a 5-10 Soph who last season averaged almost 22 points per game but shot just 37%. She did make 81 threes but at 31%. Rowe averaged 7 rebounds per game.

Katelyn Loper is a 5-11 Sr Guard who averaged 14 points shooting only 32%. Loper made 83 threes at 27%.

Lexi Peterson is 5-11 Jr Guard who averaged 10 points per game.

Off the bench will be the Frosh Neubert up front. Also 6-4 Sr Center Megan Carpenter will play. Last season Carpenter averaged 2 points and 2 rebounds per game.

Drea Toler is a 5-5 Soph Guard who averaged 3 points per game.

Amanda Delgado is a 5-7 Sr Guard who averaged 3 points per game.

Janitah Iamaleava is a 6-2 Redshirt Jr Forward who just played a few games last season, and few the year before.

Jordan Loera is a 5-9 Redshirt Jr Guard who missed last season with a knee injury but as both a Frosh and Soph averaged 6 points per game. Loera will probably be the first Guard off the bench and may well be a starter.

Predictions:
So hard to tell with the major coaching and philosophy change. Anywhere from 6th to 10th.

2015 Recruiting:
Lauren Yearwood, 6-3 P Canada. Playing now for the National 17U team. May play against the US.

Otiona Gildon (6-1 PF Spokane, WA/Gonzaga Prep) commits to Oregon, will be a Duck! # 51 ESPN

Pac 12 Preview: Oregon State

An update on Colorado who sadly lost the outstanding Post Arielle Roberson for the season with an ACL. Another update on USC who lost outstanding guard Ariya Crook who was dismissed from the team.

Last Season:

The Coaching Staff:
Scott Rueck is in his 5th season at Oregon State and last year had his 2nd 20 win season after taking over a program with just two scholarship players. This past season Oregon State lost just one home game, and won all the conference home games. Both school records. That’s quite a turnaround.

Jonas Chatterton is in his first year as an assistant after 4 years at Colorado and before that at BYU.

Mandy Close is in her 2nd year with the Beavers after 5 years at Montana State. Close is a former Oregon State star. She coaches the guards who were so good last season.

Eric Ely is in his 5th season at Oregon State, coaching the Centers, see Ruth Hamlin below. Ely has 12 years previous D 1 experience.

Losses:
The Beavers lost just two players. Guard Khadidja Toure played 9 minutes per game and averaged 3 points. Forward Alyssa Martin played 16 minutes per game starting almost half and averaged 4 points and 2 rebounds.

The Schedule:
The pre-season includes games against BYU, North Carolina and Tennessee. The Beavers play Cal and Stanford at home and Colorado and Utah on the road.

Additions:
Jen’Von’Ta Hill is a 5-8 Jr Guard From Hutchinson JC a Women’s Basketball powerhouse. Hill averaged 11 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. She was from Minnesota and played her Sr HS year in Dallas.

Alex Kalmbach is a 5-9 Frosh Guard from Oakland’s Bishop O’Dowd HS.

Marie Gulich is a 6-5 Frosh Center from Germany. She spent the summer on Germany’s 20U team.

The Team:
Oregon State returns 95% of their scoring and 96% of their rebounds.
It’s starts with the Guards and Oregon State has played a 3 Guard Line-up.

Sydney Wiese is a 6-0 Soph Guard who broke into the Pac 12 averaging 14 points and 4 assists per game at the Point. Wiese made an incredible 112 threes at 42%. She shot twice as many threes as twos. She was All Pac 12 Frosh, All Pac 12 Tourney, All Pac 12 and 2nd team Frosh All American.

Jamie Weisner is a 5-10 Frosh Guard who averaged 13 points and 5 rebounds. Weisner made 55 threes at 40% despite struggling with an injury, causing her to miss 9 games. Jamie was All Frosh Pac 12 after her healthy frosh season. She has Canadian and US citizenship and played this past summer on the Canadian National team. Jamie won the Washington State Javelin throw as a HS Sr.

Ali Gibson is a 5-11 Sr Guard who averaged 9 points while making 43 threes. Gibson averaged 9 points as a Soph and 11 as a Frosh before Weisner and Wiese joined the team.

Ruth Hamlin is a 6-6 Jr Center from Canada and like Weisner played on the Canadian National team this past summer. Named All Pac 12 Defense Hamlin averaged 9 points and 8 rebounds and had 141 blocks or 4 per game. Ruth rides and shows horses.

Deven Hunter is a 6-3 Jr Forward. Hunter averaged 9 points and 7 rebounds per game.
The entire line-up returns form this past year.

Gabriella Hanson is a 5-11 Soph Guard who averaged 7 points and 5 rebounds. Hanson’s favorite athlete growing up was Candice Wiggins and she played HS basketball with Stanford Guard Briana Roberson. Hanson has played on the Swedish 16U, 18U and last summer their 20U teams. On the 20U team she averaged 9 points and 6 rebounds in the European Championships.

Samantha Siegner is a 6-3 Jr Forward. Siegner averaged 3 points and 3 rebounds in 15 minutes. Siegner was a top 100 player out of HS.
Brenna Brown is a 6-3 Soph Forward/Center who averaged 2 points and 3 rebounds in 8 minutes last season. Brown was ranked as high as # 49 out of HS.

Predictions:
The Beavers will challenge for the league title after finishing 2nd last season. They have all five starters returning and they have both depth and height.

2015 Recruiting:
Terea Green a 6-3 post from Oregon, # 74 on PN

Taylor Kalmer, 5-8 PG, AZ 4 star on PN, top 150
