The great Saturdays at Kezar Pavilion, or the San Francisco ProAm its proper name, starts Saturday at Noon. There are 6 teams and all the Stanford players are on the South Bay team. The teams play every Saturday from Noon to 6PM, 3 games each day. The play starts this Saturday, June 18 and then Playoffs start Saturday, July 23rd.
Signing up to play from Stanford and playing for South Bay:
Chiney Ogwumike
Jos Tinkle
Amber Orrange
Jasmine Camp
Bonnie Samuelson
Taylor Greenfield
Erica Payne
Others on this team include Gabby Green a to be Soph at St Mary’s of Berkeley High School (who will be with her Travel Team for July) and just graduated Brittany Spears from Colorado who was their leading scorer this past season.
Incoming Frosh Alex Green was injured back in November and is not on a roster for the summer. The league has any number of people who play only a game or two, and I don’t know at this point how often Chiney and Jos will be available. We shall see.
Interesting players from other teams:
East Bay:
Nicolia Simmons a rugged 6-1 post who graduated from USF and has been playing in the ProAm for years. This team only has 7 players at the moment so more could be added.
Golden State:
Justine Hartman-Cal
Afure Jemerigbe-Cal
Erika Johnson -Cal
Eliza Pierre-Cal
Joesetta Fatuesi- from San Jose’s Presentation High School where she will be a Soph next year. She will be on her Travel Team in July
Golden State and East Bay play the Noon game on Saturday.
San Francisco:
Lindsey Sherbert-Cal
Talia Caldwell-Cal
Brittany Boyd-cal
Natasha Vital-Grad of Cal
Shanney Snead- Grad of Cal
Bay City:
Layshia Clarendon-Cal
Mikayla Lyles-Cal
Reshanda Gray-Cal
Jasmine Smith-St Mary’s
Jackie Nared-St Mary’s
Rama N’diaya-Grad of Cal
Saidah Allen – Fresno State (last year the top High School rebounder in the area last year)
San Francisco and Bay City play the 2PM Game on Saturday
Mission Rec Center:
Toni Russell –Grad of USF and a Kezar legend.
Lauren Bell-Pepperdine, former Sacred Heart Cathedral High School player
Jazmine Jackson-Pepperdine and SHC High School
Kamilah Jackson- Hawaii and SHC.
KiKi Moore -Fresno State and former SHC
Terrilyn Moe a Sr at Terra Nova High School
Mission Rec plays South Bay in the 4PM game. Now a caution, the Stanford players move in for summer school this weekend and historically don’t play the first weekend. This appears to be true again this year.
Come on out. It’s a great social affair and lunch or brunch or dinner in The City? You just can’t be that.

Musical chairs end
Today we have a wonderful guest columnist, Warren Grimes. Warren has done a number of interviews with Stanford Coaches and Players from his Southern California Base and is a long time Stanford WBB Fan.
The Pac-12 will have three new head coaches starting in the Fall. The choices that the Athletic Directors made for these three schools offer interesting perspectives on the art and science of selecting a head coach.
University of Washington – Athletic Director Scott Woodward reportedly paid out $475,000 (average) per year over a 5 year contract to lure Xavier head coach Kevin McGuff to come to Seattle. McGuff has an impressive resume, having led Xavier to 5 consecutive NCAA tournaments and, over the last two years, a top ten ranking. As Stanford fans well know, McGuff’s Xavier team was one possession away from making the final Four in the 2009-2010 season. This was clearly the biggest name (and the most expensive hire) among the three Pac-12 schools. There is some logic to this. Washington has been a bottom dweller over the past few seasons. The program, once one of the best in the Pac-10, needs a jump start. Maybe McGuff can give the Huskies the recruiting boost they need to get back in the mix. They have some tough competition for Northwest players – Gonzaga has been the class team of the Pacific Northwest over the past few years.
California - Athletic Director Sandy Barbour hired back Lindsay Gottlieb, formerly the Associate Head Coach under Joanne Boyle. Gottlieb has been the head coach at UC Santa Barbara over the past three years. Her record at UCSB was solid, but not overwhelming. Although Gottlieb has head coaching experience, she is young (34) and has yet to make a mark as a head coach in a major conference. Unlike Washington’s hire of Kevin McGuff, Gottlieb is a relatively low profile hire, probably offered substantially less than McGuff’s half a million yearly compensation. California has performed better than Washington over the past few seasons, but clearly more is expected. Cal had a disappointing season last year. Gottlieb, by all accounts an extremely likeable and dedicated coach, has yet to prove herself as a head coach in a top-flight conference. California will have to show improvement over the next couple of years. If not, Gottlieb will become part of the revolving door of college coaching.
UCLA - Athletic Director Dan Guerrero also “hired back” someone with UCSB connections. Cori Close had been the junior assistant coach under former UCLA coach Kathy Olivier. More recently, Close had a multi-year run as associate head coach at Florida State. Close was given responsibility for the offense, and Florida State did well during these years, with a string of NCAA tournaments and high finishes within the competitive ACC. Close has never been a head coach before, but among the three newly appointed Pac-12 coaches, Close inherits the program with the most momentum and promise. Close was chosen, according to AD Guerrero, in part because of her California connections (Close grew up in the State and graduated from UC Santa Barbara, where she played her college hoops and also served as an assistant coach). The likelihood that Close will be loyal to the program was a factor after Nikki Caldwell abandoned ship.
Was it a mistake to hire Caldwell? I’d say no. Caldwell built up the program in a couple of years to the point that last season, UCLA finished the season with a record number of wins. The Bruins, although losing to Stanford three times, distanced themselves from the non-Stanford teams in the conference. Under Caldwell, the Bruins showed the consistency and focus that was lacking under former UCLA coach Olivier. Expectations will be high for Close.
All three schools have reason to be enthusiastic about their new head coaches. But this is a rough and unforgiving profession. Chances are, four or five years from now, at least one of these three coaches will be gone. Indeed, if you look at the Pac-12-related coaching changes (see the list below), ask yourself which of these coaches has the best chance of being an elite coach 5 or so years from now.
Joanne Boyle
Nikki Caldwell
Cori Close
Lindsay Gottlieb
Bobbie Kelsey
Kevin McGuff
I’d say that Nikki Caldwell has the best chance of becoming an “elite.” My second choice would go to the stealth hire of the season -- that new head coach at the University of Wisconsin.

Musical Chairs
The about to be Pac 12 has had the Head Coaches version of musical chairs and it has reached some of our Assistants also.
Closest to home Bobbie Kelsey is the new Head Coach at the University of Wisconsin. Barry Alvarez was the long time Football Coach at Wisconsin then became the Athletic Director and he has graded A+ with his hiring of his replacement as Football Coach. Now another A for hiring Bobbie and a surprise over the presumed front runner from Wisconsin-Green Bay. Bobbie will be hiring all three Assistants so stay tuned here for more.
Over at Cal Joanne Boyle bolted from the last 3 years of her contract for the University of Virginia. This seems like a fairly lateral move pay wise so it’s interesting. The only names to replace Boyle that have surfaced are Charmin Smith, who we all know and former Cal assistant and present UCSB Coach Lindsay Gottlieb. Before Boyle left, Cal assistant coach Kevin Morrison was let go and leading scorer DeNesha Stallworth announced she would be transferring.
Down at UCLA Nikki Caldwell has left UCLA after 3 years and replaced Van Chancellor who was let go by LSU. This is a shame for the Pac 12, UCLA really advanced as a team under Caldwell. However her compensation nearly triples with the move to the Bayou Country.
Up at Washington Head Coach Tia Jackson resigned and Xavier Head Coach Kevin McGuff replaced her. McGuff spent 9 years at Xavier, the last two he was 58-7, two of the losses to Stanford. McGuff’s salary was announced as $ 475K vs Jackson’s $ 180K. Washington’s assistants were also let go and McGuff’s first move was to hire former Cal assistant Kevin Morrison.
Finally the University of Utah made it official that interim Head Coach Anthony Levrets was named the Head Coach as long time former Coach Elaine Elliot announced her retirement. Elliot had been on a leave of absence the past season. The Levrets led Utah team went 18-17 and won their league tournament to get into the NCAA tournament.
Lots of changes, stay tuned for more.
